A simple yet gourmet side dish featuring sweet, tangy, and caramelized pearl onions in a rich balsamic glaze. Perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound pearl onions, peeled (fresh or frozen)
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (or maple syrup for vegan version)
  • 12 cloves garlic, minced
  • Fresh thyme sprigs (or dried thyme)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Blanch fresh pearl onions in boiling water for 1-2 minutes, transfer to an ice bath, and peel the skins. If using frozen onions, thaw and pat dry.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Heat until shimmering.
  3. Add the pearl onions to the skillet and sauté for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
  4. Stir in minced garlic and fresh thyme sprigs. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together balsamic vinegar, honey, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  6. Pour the balsamic mixture over the onions. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are tender and the glaze thickens.
  7. Stir in 1 tablespoon of butter until melted and the glaze becomes shiny and smooth.
  8. Transfer the glazed onions to a serving dish, garnish with extra fresh thyme leaves if desired, and serve warm.
