Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 4 oz (113g) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (60g) powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold butter cubes and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to break it into small pieces until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water and mix until the dough comes together. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
  2. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and add the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the apples are tender and caramelized. Set aside to cool.
  3. In a bowl, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Set aside.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll the chilled dough into a rectangle (about 12×18 inches) on a lightly floured surface. Transfer it to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Spread the cream cheese mixture down the center of the dough, leaving about 2 inches on each side. Top with the apple filling. Cut slits into the sides of the dough (like fringe) and fold them over the filling, alternating sides to create a braided effect.
  6. Brush the pastry with a little milk or egg wash for a golden finish. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and flaky.
  7. Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the glaze. Drizzle it over the cooled kringle. Slice and serve!

Notes

[‘Keep the butter cold for a flaky pastry.’, ‘Don’t overfill the kringle to prevent spillage.’, ‘Use fresh apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best flavor.’, ‘Chill the dough to prevent shrinkage and make it easier to handle.’, ‘Adjust the milk in the glaze for the desired consistency.’]
