Hot Buttered Rum Recipe – Easy Brown Sugar Cocktail

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 1 1/2 ounces dark rum per serving
  • Optional: whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup unsalted butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  2. Using a spoon or whisk, mix the ingredients until they form a smooth and creamy paste.
  3. Boil 4 cups (950 ml) of water in a tea kettle or saucepan.
  4. Place 1 tablespoon of the butter mixture into each glass mug.
  5. Pour 1 1/2 ounces (45 ml) of dark rum into each mug. If you prefer a stronger cocktail, you can increase this to 2 ounces (60 ml).
  6. Carefully add 6-8 ounces (180-240 ml) of hot water to each mug, stirring gently to combine everything until smooth.
  7. Top each drink with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg for a festive finish.

Notes

Prepare the butter mixture ahead of time and store it in the fridge for easy serving at parties. Adjust sweetness and spice levels to your preference.
