A simple, five-ingredient appetizer featuring fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and a sweet tangy balsamic glaze, perfect for quick and elegant gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 20 cherry tomatoes, ripe and firm
  • 20 fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini), drained
  • 20 fresh basil leaves, large and vibrant green
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup balsamic glaze (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cherry tomatoes and fresh basil leaves under cold water. Pat dry gently with a paper towel. Drain the mozzarella balls thoroughly to prevent excess moisture.
  2. Optional: In a mixing bowl, lightly toss cherry tomatoes and basil leaves with half the olive oil and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
  3. Take a skewer and thread one cherry tomato first. Next, fold a basil leaf in half and slide it on. Follow with a mozzarella ball. Repeat this sequence until all ingredients are used.
  4. Arrange the finished skewers neatly on a serving platter, spacing them for easy grabbing.
  5. Drizzle the skewers lightly with the remaining olive oil, then with balsamic glaze using a spoon or drizzle bottle.
  6. Optionally, sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper over the top.

Notes

If making balsamic glaze at home, simmer 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar with 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar until reduced by half and thickened. Cool before using. Keep mozzarella well drained to avoid sogginess. Assemble skewers just before serving or refrigerate assembled skewers without glaze for up to a few hours. Drizzle glaze just before serving to avoid sogginess. For grilling, brush skewers with olive oil and grill 1-2 minutes per side.
