These black bean burgers are hearty, packed with flavor, and satisfying, perfect for family cookouts or quick weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed (or 1 1/2 cups cooked black beans)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten (or flaxseed egg for vegan option)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly to remove excess liquid. Pat them dry with a kitchen towel.
  2. Add the black beans and oats to a food processor. Pulse until the mixture is slightly chunky but well-combined (don’t over-process).
  3. Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl. Stir in the egg, breadcrumbs, onion, garlic, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until fully combined.
  4. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a patty about 1/2-inch thick.
  5. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly crisp.
  6. Place the cooked patties on buns with your favorite toppings (lettuce, tomato, avocado, etc.). Enjoy!

Notes

[‘Don’t overblend the black bean mixture to maintain texture.’, ‘Chill the mixture for 15-20 minutes if the patties feel too wet.’, ‘Preheat the skillet for a crispy exterior.’, ‘Customize the flavor with shredded cheese or hot sauce.’]
