Instructions

  1. Rinse 1 pound of fresh asparagus under cold water to remove any grit. Trim about 1-2 inches off the woody ends by bending each spear gently until it snaps naturally. Pat dry with a clean towel.
  2. Place asparagus in a large mixing bowl. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon sea salt, and 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Toss gently but thoroughly to coat evenly.
  3. Preheat grill to medium-high heat, around 400°F. For charcoal grills, wait until coals are glowing red with a light layer of ash. Lightly oil the grill grates with a paper towel dipped in oil using tongs to prevent sticking.
  4. Lay asparagus spears perpendicular to the grates or place them in a grill basket. Grill for 3-5 minutes per side, turning once with tongs, until bright green with dark grill marks and slightly crisp tips. Avoid overcooking.
  5. Remove asparagus from grill and transfer to a serving platter. Zest half a lemon over the top for brightness. If using, sprinkle 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese immediately so it melts slightly.
