creamy classic milkshake recipe - featured image

A rich and creamy vanilla milkshake made with full-fat vanilla ice cream and whole milk, perfect for a nostalgic and refreshing summer treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (475 ml) vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Maraschino cherry (for garnish)
  • Ice cubes (optional, a few)

Instructions

  1. Measure 2 cups (475 ml) of vanilla ice cream, 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk, 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (if using). Have ice cubes and garnishes ready.
  2. Add the ice cream, milk, vanilla extract, and sugar into your blender. Blend on medium speed for about 30 seconds until smooth and creamy. If you prefer a frostier shake, toss in 3-4 ice cubes and blend an additional 15 seconds.
  3. Check consistency: The milkshake should be thick but pourable. If it’s too thick, add a splash more milk (1 tablespoon at a time). Too thin? Add a bit more ice cream or a couple more ice cubes and blend again.
  4. Carefully pour the milkshake into your prepared glasses. Top with a generous swirl of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry for that classic diner feel.
  5. Serve immediately while cold and frothy.

Notes

Use ice cream softened for 5-10 minutes for easier blending. Start blending on low speed then increase to medium for smooth texture. Chill glasses beforehand to keep milkshake colder longer. Adjust thickness by adding milk or ice cream gradually. For a dairy-free version, use coconut milk ice cream and almond or oat milk.
