This comforting casserole combines seasoned ground beef, creamy cheese, and hearty pasta for the ultimate family-friendly meal. Perfect for busy weeknights or potlucks!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni or small shells (or gluten-free pasta)
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (sharp cheddar preferred)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks (about 8-10 minutes). Drain any excess grease and set aside.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until softened and fragrant, roughly 3-4 minutes.
  4. Stir in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and Italian seasoning. Simmer for 5 minutes to let the flavors meld. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  5. While the beef mixture simmers, boil the pasta in a medium saucepan according to package instructions. Drain and toss with melted butter to prevent sticking.
  6. In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta, heavy cream, and half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Stir until evenly mixed.
  7. Layer the casserole in a 9×13-inch baking dish: Start with half of the pasta mixture, followed by the beef and tomato mixture, then repeat. Top with the remaining cheddar cheese.
  8. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until bubbly and golden on top.
  9. Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

[‘Don’t overcook the pasta; cook it just shy of al dente since it will continue cooking in the oven.’, ‘Taste the beef mixture before layering to ensure it’s well-seasoned.’, ‘Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting.’, ‘Allow the casserole to cool slightly after baking to help the layers set for easier serving.’]
